Enter date with either date field widget OR number keys

We have some users that we are transferring from another application to a Profound UI entry screen. The current app transforms a date entered as 021422 to 2/14/2022. The users feel it is slower to have to mouse over and choose from the calendar. I do want to keep the calendar widget as some users might prefer it. I have tried some javascript to transform the date if users were going to enter it numerically but then if they choose from the calendar, it duplicates the slashes. Has anyone developed a solution for this situation? Perhaps there is a combination of settings I can use for this to work properly.
