Possible problem with monitor settings

We are using profoundui Genie. We have done our development on two pc's / machines, and we have worked most of the kinks out. However, on a couple of recent occasions when we were giving a customer or another internal user a demo on their machines, the Genie screens appeared jumbled and, for all intents and purposes, and unusable. For example, the text on buttons exceeded the size of the button. Also, data input fields didn't allign with their respective data prompt. The bottom of a given data entry screen was cut off. My boss was humiliated when he attempted to give a demo at one of our customer sites, and many of the screens that looked in order on our development machines, were scrambled up on the customer's computer.

My question is; before we deploy the Genie version of our software, do we have to make sure that all monitors are set to some sort of default settings?

This doesn't sound like a monitor resolution problem necessarily. My first question would be what browser and specifically what version they were running.

Two of the pc's that we tested among our current users were using Internet Explorer
8.0.6001.18702 (same as the pc's that we did the development on). I think most of our users use IE. And their pc's have various resolution settings available.

Originally, when we first started working with Genie, the other developer and I found that the resolution setting 1280 x 1024 seemed to accomodate the Genie renderings best (no scrolling vertically or horizontally to view the entire screen). We both changed to that resolution, continued on with the screen modifications, thinking that the resolution issue was settled.

I talked to Greg a couple of weeks ago and he mentioned making sure that all of our browsers were in line, same versions, etc. He did mentioned that video cards could be an issue. If I remember correctly, I believe he mentioned a resolution setting of not lower than 1024 x 768.

I have sinced changed the resolution setting on my pc to 1024 x 768 just to view the screen renderings. Of course, everything is bigger and some items are off or partially off the screen.

We're now wondering what's the best way to proceed. Certainly, we have customers or potential customers of which we have no control over their hardware or settings. Do we modify our current Genie renderings to accomodate a standard resolution setting or do we delete current renderings from the Genie adminstrator and start from scratch? Or is there some other solution? You mentioned in your response that the problem might not be the resolution.

There are two issues being discussed here.
  • 1. Choice of Screen resolution
    2. The original problem
If you don't have control of the end user's desktop/screen resolution, we recommend you use the defacto minimum of 1024 x 768. You can center the content on the page which will apply to all resolutions. This is very common on many websites. It is difficult to say what caused the original problem. Screen resolution is an unlikely candidate. We have not had any other reports of this occurring. Are you able to reproduce this on any PC you have access to?

We checked a number of pc's this morning and we can reproduce the effect on any pc that doesn't have the 1280 x 1024 setting available. It seems everything is fine when the resolution is set to 1280 x 1024... and above.

Yesterday and today, I deleted a couple of screen renderings from the Genie administrator to see how unmodified screens would appear. One thing I noticed is that the border for all buttons cuts through the last letter of the text of the button. I also found that when using the designer with the resolution set at 1024 x 768, weird things happen. Here's an example:
1. Deleted our Customer Master subfile screen from administrator and then launched Genie.
2. Navigated to Customer Master maintenance where subfile screen seemed to appear at a lower resolution.
3. Went into Designer mode whereupon the above subfile puffed up to what seemed right for the 1024 x 768 setting and the select boxes no longer aligned with their respective subfile rows.

4. Completed minor modification (added code to onrowclick property).
5. Saved rendering and exited Designer.
6. Subfile text now appears much smaller than it did originally (in step 2).
7. Exit Customer Master maint and then go back into it whereupon the subfile appears to be the proper size for the 1024 x 768 setting. However, the bottom of the subfile is now overlaying the function buttons which are located below the subfile and the selection boxes are not aligned with their respective rows.

I've sent a picture. Disregard left side of the image and the proportions, but notice the the bottom of the subfile and row selection boxes. None of this happens at the 1280 x 1024 setting. We also deleted internet temporary files from my computer thinking something may be lingering interfering with Genie.

Also non-subfile screens seem to be thrown off when viewed under the 1024 x 768 setting.
Hard to describe a pattern, but sometimes the data fields are not on the same line as the data prompts/text. Or sometimes the text is overlaying other text. These are screens modified under the 1280 x 1024 setting but now being displayed after a particular pc's setting was changed to 1024 x 768.
