Multi-line input field

Post by bernard602 »

A multi-line input field that is 200 chars and defined in SDA to wrap at 50 positions (4 lines) is being interpreted by Genie as 4 different input field. Insert mode doesn't function correctly.

Unfortunately, a web browser does not work the same way as a 5250 screen. If you define a field in 5250 to be long enough, it'll wrap to the next line. However, in a browser, a long field will simply keep going to the right, it'll never wrap. (instead, if it goes off the screen, you'll get a scrollbar at the bottom... but it has no ability to wrap.) So to make things work as much like 5250 as possible, Genie has to split the field up into several smaller fields placed on separate lines, this is the only way to make them appear on separate lines. But that, as you saw, will prevent the insert mode from working as expected.

One thing you can try is combining the fields into a "text area". You can do that in the Genie designer by clicking the first field, then holding down the "Control" key and clicking the other 3 fields so that they are all highlighted at once. Then, right-click and choose "combine into Text Area" from the right-click menu. This will give you a multi-line input field (in the style that a browser uses for multi-line input). It won't work exactly like the single line does in 5250, but may serve your purposes...

I am not sure if you have access to the Profound UI DDS Conversion module. That process is no limited by 5250 and would create a true Text Area for you, if you converted the screen. Converted screens can operate seamlessly within Genie.
