Toolbar Items

Hi
On the 'Atrium Overview' documentation page you have a toolbar item that is "Messages (60)". I'm assuming the 60 relates to the number of messages.
I love the idea of being able to have a dynamic toolbar item of that type - any tips on how to go about it?
