problem with subfile column in screen column 80

I have a couple of subfiles in which there is a single character column at screen column 80. This column is not being recognized in Genie as a column in the subfile. It is being displayed as a stack of output fields. That alone would not be the end of the world, but I have modified the CSS for subfile text color and this column is being displayed as Black (instead of white) on a dark background. So it's virtually invisible.
Are you aware of any problem occurring when a subfile column begins (and ends) in screen column 80?
