Are there places to add JavaScript, or other code to the rendered html, to apply other Web- 2.0 aspects, like DOM control, or AJAX calls?

Yes, widgets support a multitude of JavaScript events. For example: mouseover, ontabclick, etc. You can add your own JavaScript there. We also provide JavaScript API, to allow you to easily get references to widgets so they can be controlled with JavaScript through the DOM. For making AJAX calls, you can use any AJAX code or library, but we also provide a built-in documented AJAX library of our own that ships with the platform.
